Fly Fishermen, mark your calendars!

Tue, February 08, 2011

In conjunction with Nate Herman, I will be hosting a fly fishing day at the Hooked On Fishing park in East Peoria.  We held an event last year and it was a huge success.  This event is being held to raise funds to keep the park running.  The park is designed to allow kids and senior citizens the chance to fish waters that are intensively managed.  The lakes are full of fish, including the spring-fed trout pond that has the biggest trout you will find anywhere in the state.

The event will be held on March 12th from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  Here are the guidelines:

1. Fly fishing only
2. All hooks must have the barb pinched down
3.  Purely catch - photo- and release
4.  A suggested $25 donation will get you into the park (if you can donate more, the park would truly appreciate it).

Here are some photos of last year’s event:

Fly fishermen, make sure not to miss this one.  Tell your friends and let’s raise a ton of money for the park, and have some great times doing it.

Jonn,
I am highly interested in the event and would be willing to help assist if needed. I am a self-taught fly fisherman with about 9 year’s experience. I would be capable of demonstrating basic knots, casting, fighting fish, etc. I also have a decent amount of fly tackle that I could donate to the cause (flies, tippet material, and terminal tackle). Contact me at your convenience to discuss anything else you can think of. Unfortunately I missed it last year due to a USMC training evolution, I’m ecstatic to hear it went as well as it did, and the crew is planning it again this year.

Colt:

Appreciate your ability to help.  I think the help would come in the form of casting instruction for those who need it.  Last year was a more “how to” event, while this year is more centered on the fishing (catching).  But I am sure there will be people there who will need some assistance with casting and basic leader/knot info.  Bring whatever works for you….....we would appreciate it.

Don:

If you are beginner, don’t miss this one as there will be people to help and you cannot hardly not catch fish.

Education is definitely a priority for this event. Anyone wanting to learn to flyfish most definitely will receive instruction from the professionals! All support to the fishing park is much appreciated and needed for the upcoming season!

Looking forward to this.  I’ll bring my new Clouser rod, probably be the first time I swing it too.

Is this event still being planned?  My brother and I were thinking of coming.  We’re both in the beginner category but we’ve both fooled around with fly flying in years past and are eager to get into it again.

Yes, it sure is.  A week from this Saturday.  Would love to have you come out.  There will be plenty of guys to help you with any fly fishing questions/concerns you might have.
