Top 5 Champ

First up, congrats to our 2016 Top 5 Champ, Mark Balbinot, and big thank you to all who took the time to share one or more of our 136 bass.  Been another fun year of fish stories with more than a few new records along the way.

2016 Totals (* = new record)
*February = 7 bass (old record 2 both 2014 and 2015)
*March = 34 bass (old record 13 in 2014)
April = 31 bass
May = 19 bass
June = 15 bass
July = 8 bass
August = 1 bass
September = 6 bass
October = 4 bass
November = 4 bass
*December = 7 bass (no previous record)

Comments: Our year began with a Newton Lake fish caught by Bruce Zilkowski on February 15 and concluded with Mark Balbinot’s outstanding strip pit haul on December 11.  From the “Believe it or Not” file, our last submission of the year was also the largest being Mark’s 7-7.

Top 5 Weight by Month (* = new record)
*February = 22-9 (6-7,4-15,4-10,4-1,2-8) old record 9-5 in 2015
*March = 29-7 (6-5,6-1,5-14,5-10,5-9) old record 27-12 in 2015
April = 27-10 (5-15,5-12,5-8,5-5,5-2)
May = 27-1 (6-3,5-8,5-4,5-2,5-0)
June = 24-7 (5-13,5-4,5-2,4-2,4-2)
July = 20-5 (4-12,4-8,4-4,3-12,3-1)
August = 4-7 (1 bass)
September = 19-3 (4-11,4-4,3-13,3-7,3-0)
October = 15-6 for 4 bass (6-0,3-8,3-6,2-8)
*November = 24-9 for 4 bass (6-8,6-5,6-4,5-8) old record 23-14 in 2014
*December = 28-7 (7-7,6-5,5-13,4-11,4-3) no previous record
(Note: March 2016 is now #3 month total all-time, December 2016 is #5, April 2016 is #9 and May 2016 is #10)

Comments: Multiple new monthly records via a strong start and an incredible finish.  Definitely an endorsement for getting the poles out early and not putting them up too soon.  Once again, August could use some help with only one bass submitted same as 2014 and not too unlike 2015 with only 3 bass.

Comments: Several new records including a new mark for our frontrunner, the good old plastic worm.  In addition, a new category, underspins, made a big splash in December, posting two of our Top 10 as part of a 27-2 fish limit for our top angler (better add a few of those to the tacklebox).

Comments: Six different months with submissions and an incredible finish propelled Mark Balbinot to the top of the list and into a tie with Jake Breeson’s 2014 catch for the all-time Top 5 weight.  All told we had 17 anglers for the second straight year with a good mix of newcomers and veterans.

So, it is time to do it again and this year.  Keep in mind that we have yet to see a January bass and we’ve got a couple weeks left to get it done.  I encourage you to sharpen up those augers if you’ve got enough ice, take advantage of some warmer than normal temps on the way or find your nearest power plant lake and take a shot.

In addition, we are looking to expand this thing beyond bass if anyone is interested.  I look to have another posting later this week for a rule sort of rundown.  Thanks again to everyone who took part (or tuned in for the updates), here’s hoping you choose to take part in 2017.  If you’ve wavered or just stumbled onto our project, hop on board as it can add a little something extra to the fishing experience.  Best of luck and talk to you later.  Troy
