Eagles nesting in Cook Co.

Tue, April 17, 2012

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

A family of bald eagles has been found nesting on Cook County forest preserve property located south of Chicago.

The Forest Preserve District of Cook County and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have confirmed a female eagle and believe her eaglets have recently hatched. Other eagle nests have been found in Cook County in the past, but officials say they believe this is the first hatching site the public has had visual access to in more than a century.

The eagles are expected to remain in the nest through summer before migrating south in the fall.

Officials warn that federal law carries fines of $100,000 and prison time for interfering with nesting bald eagles.
